AM/NS develops India's first indigenous specialist-grade steel plates for NPCIL
Steel Insights|August 2021
Nuclear power assumes strategic importance in order to unlock national energy efficiency potential. Owing to the criticality of the service applications coupled with lack of specialist manufacturing facilities among domestic plate mills, the Indian nuclear program has always imported critical alloyed steel grades from steel mills in Europe.

AM/NS develops India's first indigenous specialist-grade steel plates for NPCIL

The imported steels are thereafter used by Indian equipment manufacturers to fabricate equipment for nuclear industry.

As a leading steel manufacturer in India, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) chose to fulfil the void in supply chain by delivering alloy steel for nuclear power generation sector.

This incredible assignment was fulfilled in partnership with the Indian engineering conglomerate Larsen & Toubro (L&T) – one of the companies engaged in fabrication of specialized equipment for the nuclear power sector.

One of the orders received by L&T was for fabrication of steam generators for nuclear power plant where steel grade EN 10028 16Mo3 with special characteristics was required.

The special plates were required for use in heavy water reactors for the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL).

L&T was scouting for indigenous sources.

AM/NS India with its ever dynamismand commitment for development of import substitute product took up the challenge to develop and supply the critical grade within stipulated timelines.

Thus, started an exemplary success story of industry to industry collaboration for indigenisation and a step in the right direction towards an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self Sufficient India)

AM/NS India and L&T had collaborated earlier to produce and supply several special steel grades required by the latter for special applications like defence, critical boilers and pressure vessels. So, L&T was fully appreciative of the superior technology deployment and high quality of steel produced at AM/NS India Hazira facility. Also, the geographical proximity of the manufacturing sites of L&T and AM/ NS India was an added advantage.

So, it was natural that the two giant companies AM/NS India and L&T work synergistically towards the goal of nation building.

What is so special about EN 10028 16Mo3 grade?
