A wee bit away from the hustle bustle of Nainital lies a heritage homestay called Abbotsford, owned by Jahnavi Prasada. A gloriously pretty retreat, it is full of tales of the colonial days of the Raj and has quickly become a haven for writers yearning for creative rejuvenation.
Abbotsford is a lot like its name. A quiet, quaint, British homestay that looks every bit out of a picture postcard. Tucked away in a cosy nook of the bustling hill town of Nainital, it’s a retreat for poets or authors. For, with a scenic beauty and serenity that this homestay offers, lyrical poems and pleasant prose would flow just like a brook. Now we know how Daffodils and The Solitary Reaper were inspired by Wordsworth. Velveteen grass, colourful rhododendrons, old colonial architecture, the azure sky, chirping of birds, buzz of bees and the sharp intake of crisp mountain air. It takes you back to that time and realm…
Owned and run by the Prasada family, the beautiful heritage property is looked after by Jahnavi Prasada, daughter of the former vice president of the Indian National Congress and sister of politician Jitin Prasada. Janhavi comes from a family of the erstwhile zamindars of Oudh (Uttar Pradesh) in northern India. She nurtures her 145-year-old ancestral home Abbotsford, in the Kumaon hills. It was here that her magical childhood was spent. A filmmaker, she is the author of her ongoing graphic novel on Mahatma Gandhi with a deep passion for photography. She has successfully entered the hospitality business by turning this family house into an exclusive boutique countryside homestay. It is here that she draws most of the inspiration reflected in her life and work.
