Lalla Hirayama On Living With PCOS

WHILE so many women around the world suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome, few understand just what the disorder does to the body and how it affects their lives. PCOS is one of the most common female endocrine disorders in the world yet one of the most undiagnosed, and when women are finally diagnosed it’s often too late. PCOS is essentially an imbalance of many female hormone metabolism problems that may affect the overall health and appearance of women. It is a big reason why some women struggle to fall pregnant. Women with PCOS will have minimal to no ovulation. There is poor maturation of the growing egg and it is not released – preventing conception. PCOS sufferers will also have high male hormone effects on their body which leads to issues with acne, unwanted hair growth, and thinning or loss of head hair, while they also have a higher chance of experiencing weight gain and suffering from depression and anxiety. Recently local TV personality Lalla Hirayama has opened up about her battle with PCOS and how the disorder affected her life.

“I always struggled with acne as a kid,” Lalla tells us. “I was active and healthy but I carried a little puppy fat, suffered from bad skin and I had braces. I went onto Roaccutane at 16 which cleared up my skin for about six months before the acne reappeared. I tired antibiotics, the pill, laser treatments, fancy skin regimens at home but nothing helped much.”
