Royals Down Under
Royal Britain Presents Royal Life|Issue 37

Earlier this year, the Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall headed for Australia to launch the Commonwealth Games on behalf of the Queen and embark on a seven-day tour of the country. They also managed to squeeze in a visit to the South Pacific island of Vanuatu…

Royals Down Under

Though the activities of the older Royals have been somewhat overshadowed by those of the younger generation of late – well, certainly in the early part of 2018, anyway, Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall have been very busy indeed as the Prince of Wales takes over many of his mother’s official duties.

In April of 2018 Prince Charles and Camilla embarked on a short but jam-packed tour of Australia, marking the 16th visit by Prince Charles and the third for Camilla.

The Prince of Wales was there on his mother’s behalf to open the 21st Commonwealth Games, an international multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. It made sense to combine such a long trip with a tour of the country, but while Prince Charles had a packed seven-day itinerary ahead of him, wife Camilla was due to return after three days to take care of her engagements back home.

A PERSONAL MESSAGE

The Royal couple touched down in Brisbane on an Royal Australian Air Force plane at midday on April 4th, the day of the ceremony, having spent the previous few days at a friend’s home in New South Wales. Their first stop was Old Government House at the Botanic Gardens for a formal welcome to Australia by Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove, Queensland governor Paul de Jersey and Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

They inspected the honour guard and were given a 21-gun salute before taking an informal stroll through the gardens and signing the visitors’ book.

Next stop was a visit to the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane where they chatted to members of the public. They also visited the nearby Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital where they met 13-year-old Abigail Head, who has only recently finished chemotherapy.
