When Ana de Armas ended their hot and heavy year long relationship in January, Ben Affleck’s fragile world came crashing down. The actor was left reeling by her decision, which WHO understands was very much one-sided, and friends feared he would fall off his precarious wagon of sobriety.

Sources tell us that Affleck, 48 – who Jennifer Garner kicked out of their marital mansion in 2015 due to his boozing, and divorced him three years later – put “high hopes on his relationship with Ana, but the pressure on her was too great”.

The insider explains, “Ana’s only 32 and found herself dealing with taking care of an alcoholic who struggles with his sobriety.” But harder still was the connection Affleck still shares with Garner, with whom he shares daughters Violet, 15, and Seraphina, 12, and son Samuel, 8. Actress de Armas complained privately that she would never live up to Garner’s “saint” status. “Ben, too, had hoped Ana might be The One, but he just couldn’t reach the same level of happiness he once had with his wife before he went off the rails,” adds the insider.
