WITH AN immune system that is still developing, your little munchkin is likely to fall prey to conditions prevalent during this time of the year. But hey, you don't need to panic yet. Here is a lowdown on the most common ones and ways to tackle them.

COLD AND FLU

Caused by viruses affecting the upper respiratory tract, a cold usually starts with sore throat followed by symptoms like runny nose, sneezing and mild cough and fever. On the other hand, flu is manifested as high fever accompanied by body ache, weakness and fatigue in addition to the regular symptoms of cold.

KEEP IT AT BAY: “A yearly flu shot will keep the flu bug away from your child,” says Dr. Vaneet Parmar, head of paediatrics at W. Pratiksha Hospital, Gurugram. In addition, you must ensure proper hand hygiene for the whole family. Also, dressing your child in layers is crucial to keep her warm. The golden rule: She should wear the same number of layers you are wearing, plus one. Start with thermals and socks as the first layer, followed by sweaters or turtlenecks and sweatpants or woollen pyjamas. In case of extreme cold, a wind resistant jacket can be added. Also, make sure that you choose breathable fabric while buying winter wear for your baby. Avoid scarfs as they pose strangulation risk.
