Hampi

- Md. Masarrath Ali Khan
Hampi

‘….in this street live many merchants, and there you will find all sorts of rubies, and diamonds, and emeralds, and pearls, and seed-pearls, and clothes, and every other sort of thing there is on earth that you may wish to buy.’

Thus wrote Domingo Paes, a Portuguese traveller who visited Hampi during the reign of Sri Krishnadeva Raya.

Hampi has been an important pilgrimage centre since ancient times. It is situated on the southern bank of the Tungabhadra River in Bellary district of Karnataka. It was also known as Pampa Kshetra, Kishkindha Kshetra and Virupakshapura. It was the capital of the Vijayanagara kingdom from 1343 AD to 1565 AD.
