The Next Age Of Personal Computing

I watch with great interest as companies try to define the next age of personal computing.

This all started in the ’80s and ’90s, when people had desktops at home and the office. Then notebook and tablet computers became the norm, especially for students and field workers.

The notebook computer seemed to fit the very notion of a personal computer. It still is the main device for people who need to get work done or who are staying connected. Smartphones and tablets have gotten a lot better; they definitely are the go-to devices for content consumption but offer mixed results as PC replacements.

Companies are now pushing for the next boundary but this seems to be a challenge with many possible solutions. Companies like Apple and Microsoft are approaching this in different yet strikingly similar ways.

Both companies are looking to convertible tablet-based devices (the iPad Pro for Apple, the Surface Pro for Microsoft), which are full featured touch tablets that similarly accept external keyboard accessories and digital pen input by way of a stylus or pencil.
