When Ashraf Ismail’s in the director’s chair of an Assassin’s Creed game you know you’re getting something special. Almost four years ago he headed up one of the best ACs ever made in Black Flag (a game so good it’s finally spawned a spin-off just based on its naval combat mechanics), and now he’s back with what could be the rejuvenation the series has been crying out for. For a series that’s been suffering from one of the most acute cases of franchise fatigue over recent years, Assassin’s Creed: Origins has been attracting hype and buzz like a magnet. And with good reason, too - Ismail and his team of devs at Ubisoft Montreal have kept the familiar shell of AC on the outside (now glittering in the North African sun thanks to Xbox One X’s 4K magic) and rewritten almost everything else underneath.
