Taking a stroll along the seafront path at Budleigh Salterton is a source of great pleasure for many people.
But while most walkers here today are admiring the views across the beach and gazing out over the glistening water, Tom Buxton-Smith is busy looking skywards.
As engineering projects manager for East Devon District Council, it’s his job to make sure the cliffs here are in good working order.
That means checking for any signs of landslip caused by water damage from above and below, observing any changes and making sure there is no obvious loose debris.
Inspecting and maintaining this stretch of East Devon’s coastline is vital for public safety but also for preserving the 185 million years of Earth’s history, lying inside these magnificent red sandstone cliffs. The Jurassic Coast – which stretches from Exmouth to Studland in Dorset – is a World Heritage Site, attracting thousands of visitors every year who come to fossil hunt and enjoy the views in this special spot.
It’s up to Tom and his team, who look after a large part of East Devon’s section of Jurassic Coast, to strike a careful balance between protection and pleasure.
