WHEN THE SUN’S SHINING, THERE ARE FEW BETTER PLACES TO BE THAN ENSCONCED IN A SUSSEX BEER GARDEN WITH A LOCALLY MADE PINT IN HAND
1 The Black Rabbit, Arundel
This enormously popular pub has tables right at the edge of the Arun, where pleasure boats putter past. A playground means little ones are amply catered for and there are beautiful views back towards the castle. For those fancying a walk, the route leading from the car park near Arundel Museum along the river is pleasant and not too taxing – and there’s a much quicker route back along the road for the way home.

2 The Griffin, Fletching
The views from The Griffin’s two-acre, split-level beer garden are seriously impressive – with Sheffield Park and the South Downs spread out below. Nearer the pub is a prettily planted terrace while a barbecue, wood oven and the outside Sheffield Bar mean most needs are covered without having to set foot inside. .

3 The Ram Inn, Firle
At the centre of the charming village of Firle, The Ram is a sprawling, traditional Sussex brick and flint building with a lovely walled garden. There’s a play area for children and a well-reviewed, locally sourced menu. The pub is surrounded by good walking country and there’s plenty to enjoy if you’re planning a day out, including the country sea of the Bloomsbury set, Charleston, and Virginia Woolf’s former home Monk’s House in Rodmell.
