As a black comedy following the disintegration of a TV chef’s family comes to Sussex, star Aden Gillett remembers growing up near Lewes.
Five years ago a paparazzi photograph captured the TV chef Nigella Lawson apparently being assaulted by her then husband Charles Saatchi.
The image shocked the country, but for playwright Torben Betts it provided the inspiration for his black comedy Caroline’s Kitchen, which is coming to Sussex twice ahead of a trip to New York. Aden Gillett is playing Mike, the husband of the titular Caroline, played by Lovejoy star Caroline Langrishe. She’s a TV chef whose fame and riches are beginning to push the alpha male of the family into the background. “He’s just a bully, lacking in social graces,” says Aden. “He has made a lot in the banking business, but suddenly his wife has this flair for making money. He is in love with his wife, but he wouldn’t be able to say it to her. I find him a nightmare – but there’s a certain pleasure in airing the lizard brain which lurks in 99 per cent of men, but hopefully normally gets sat on.”
The play is set in Caroline’s kitchen as family members descend after a filming session and the booze begins to flow. In the pressure cooker environment both secrets and lies from the past are gradually exposed.
