I slip into the woods. Hurrying down the path and turning left, eager to feel the trees closing in, to lose the outlines of road and farmland behind me. I haven’t got long. I’m meant to be meeting friends in Lavenham. I should probably be there now, but the call of the wood was too strong. I kept driving through the village towards Assington and Arger Fen, craving the trees, the winter air, the green, leaf-filtered light.
