Rinku Khanna*, 29, a Bangalore-based techie, is in a no-strings-attached relationship with an ex-colleague. It had been going great over the past few months—they would meet at each other’s place or in hotels for marathon lovemaking sessions. “He is a sweet guy but the problem is that he likes to stick to a particular sex routine—kissing, a bit of foreplay, and then missionary. As a result, sometimes I orgasm, sometimes I don’t. Sex with him does leave me wanting for more,” she narrates. The tried and tested formula often brings in boredom, like in this case. While some may find this predictable pattern comfortable, others find it hard to peak with the same moves. Khanna has tried discussing her concerns, but in this case the guy has made it amply clear that he is content with their regular routine, and is willing to try doggy-style occasionally to amp up their bedroom game. So, what can Khanna possibly do to turbocharge her vanilla sex life into something more adrenalin-pumping? She is fine if the guy prefers missionary to other acrobatic sex positions, but can this conventional position be lifted into something more fulfilling? The good news is, it can be spiced up, provided you keep certain points in mind.
KNOW YOUR EROGENOUS ZONES
Do you orgasm more from clitoral stimulation or from vaginal penetration? If you say yes to the former, you are not alone. A study, published in The Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy in 2015, shows that about 37 per cent of the women (aged between 18 and 94 years) the survey covered in the US, needed clitoral stimulation to achieve orgasm while about 18 per cent said that vaginal penetration was enough for them to climax. So, the first step to escaping vanilla sex is knowing your body and what kind of stimulation works for you. If vaginal penetration doesn’t make you come, find ways to incorporate clitoral stimulation in your missionary position.
