Grown-up or ‘adult’ chords. No we’re not referring to the guitarist that played on those dodgy 70s soft porn soundtracks; we’re talking tasteful, ‘clever chords’ for want of a better term. During the 60s a new genre was spawned, AOR or ‘Album Orientated Rock’. Albums became the coolest format and they freed artists from having to write catchy, throwaway pop songs. Pioneers of the genre were undisputedly The Beatles (Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band) and Cream (Disraeli Gears); these two seminal albums opened the floodgates for a wave of creativity that extended well into the 70s and beyond. At the jazzier end of the spectrum AOR encompassed ‘full on’ fusion pioneers such as Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale, Mike Stern and Pat Metheny.
