Verdict On Talaq: A Victory For All Women

The Supreme Court's judgment in the triple talaq is to be welcomed as a step in the right direction towards gender justice not only within the religious communities but also for the society in general. The ban decrees instantaneous triple talaq invalid and unconstitutional. Though the ban may not have addressed many issues like providing relief to the victims of the triple talaq nor any form of punishment meted out to the perpetrator as well, we cannot deny that justice was served to Shah Bano and comes as a welcome move to many others in a similar situation.

In the Quran, the triple talaq is not divorcing a woman by uttering the words talaq three times. It is an elaborate procedure which needs to be followed to divorce a woman following a period of iddah (separation).
