‘People have been touched by it'

David Tennant and Jessica Hynes walk into a production office at Bray Studios in Berkshire. It’s summer 2019, and they are looking rather contented having just filmed the final scene of the second series of There She Goes.

When they were first approached to play Simon and Emily, the parents of a girl with severe learning disabilities, this brave comedy was just a taster script. But after the success of season one in 2018, with Jessica picking up a BAFTA for her role, the show is now returning in a new prime-time slot on BBC2.

The five-parter picks up the story 18 months on, and in the opener, we follow the Yates family as they attend a charity sports day at 11-year-old Rosie’s school.

There are also flashbacks to when Rosie (Miley Locke) was three as Simon and Emily struggle to adapt to their parental duties.

Here, stars David, 49, and Jessica, 47, tell TV Times why this is a show that they are both immensely proud of…

Where do we find the Yates family at the start of the new series?

JESSICA: They’re at a point where they’re beginning to get to the bottom of Rosie’s diagnosis and finally getting some answers about what her condition is. There’s an element of relief but they’re also coming to terms with the bottom line of their marriage as well. The few years leading up to this have been hard for Simon and Emily – and Rosie’s older brother Ben [Edan Hayhurst] – and that’s reflected very honestly. It’s an exploration of a marriage that has gone through real challenges and is trying to stay alive.
