Coffee Cake, Anyone?

A celebration often calls for cake but when a baker recently saw DJ Black Coffee accepting a Grammy Award she knew it called for a big cake. And big it was by anyone's standards.

Kurhula Makhuvele baked a life-sized cake that resembled the award-winning DJ, creating a confectionery that came in at 2m tall and weighed 150kg.

She wanted to honour the achievement of the renowned DJ - real name Nkosinathi Maphumulo - who won the Grammy for best dance/electronic album for Subconsciously.

She also wanted to inspire the kids at the BuhleBezwe Children's Home in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, to work as hard as the musician, she says.

“It's such a good message to the kids to say, 'You know what, no matter where you're coming from, have a dream. Work on your dream”, Kurhula tells YOU.

The 30-year-old, who lives in Midrand, Johannesburg, is a self-taught baker and says this project was no piece of cake! There were times in the nine days it took to make it that she questioned why shed taken on such a mammoth task.

“Every moment that I was struggling, I'd ask myself what had I gotten myself into or what was I thinking,” she says with a laugh. “But I knew I'd never give up - it's never an option. If it meant I had to spend more days doing that cake, then I would have done so.

The kids weren't the only ones who loved the cake. Black Coffee took to Twitter to praise Kurhula for her beautiful work. “Blown away by your dedication and talent, may God bless you,” he said.
