The Zimbabwean-born singer might not be a household name yet, but her music has already featured on Netflix’s hit series Blood & Water and other shows. We chatted to the 27-year-old about her debut album and more.
You quit your job in finance to pursue a music career. What made you take the leap?
It was the scariest thing I’ve ever had to do. It takes a lot of faith, and I didn’t just up and leave. In 2019 I started working part time Monday to Wednesday, then music the rest of the week. This gave me room to learn and see if I could make a living solely doing music.
I was also fortunate to have a boss who understood that I needed to do it for myself. Even though I didn’t have everything figured out, I believed in myself and my vision, and God has a way of rewarding hard work and sacrifice.
You performed the theme song for season 1 of Blood & Water and five of your tracks are featured in season 2. How did that come about?
In 2019 I did a few theme songs and soundtracks for TV shows like Side Dish, The River and Lockdown so I had in a way laid the groundwork.
In 2020 [Netflix] reached out for a theme song for the show. They told me the storyline and I wrote what I felt and fortunately they loved it.
