Sara Ali Khan has found home in an industry she loves. Her two films have earned her critical acclaim and social media stardom. And she’s finding a way to live and work by her own rules. It’s no wonder she can’t stop smiling.
Sara Ali Khan is off caffeine. Why is this pertinent? Well, the actor has been up since 3:45 a.m.; run for an hour on the treadmill; reached an early morning shoot on time; and, when we meet around lunch, has the energy of a hopped-up teenager. She rushes into her vanity van for a moment’s break, profusely apologises for the delay, and, as she heads back to the set, offers hot coffee or tea with milk and sugar with an insistence usually reserved for Indian grandmothers. It’s the perfect introduction to Sara. The qualities for which she was lauded in her debut film Kedarnath—confidence, conviction, self-assurance, vibrancy—aren’t just limited to her on-screen persona. This is who she is.
“There’s nowhere else I’d rather be. You pack me up right now, and where will I go? This is the best part of my day, the best part of my life. I’m privileged, thrilled, and honoured to be able to act. The minute you know what you really want to do, sleep, hunger, or anything else doesn’t matter. How lucky I am to be doing what I love,” she says.
