Lakshmi is no regular supermodel. Comfortable in her skin, unafraid of her body, and ever-ready to speak her mind, she talks to dear friend and fellow Goan Sacha Mendes about sustainable living, the power of empathy, and the importance of being true to your identity.
You’re strong, articulate, opinionated, a trained singer, an excellent cook, and a great friend. I’ve always enjoyed the manner in which you conduct yourself. There’s something attractive about that, and I don’t mean just physical beauty...
I like the idea of having a multi-dimensional life. I don’t find it beneficial to isolate oneself into doing just one thing. If you put your mind and heart into it, whether it’s cooking or gardening, it can all be a joy. The whole point of me having my home in Goa is so that I can do all of these things. I continue to work as a fashion model. I’ve been doing it for 15 years and all my clients have been very supportive. I have my 12 dogs here, and a property large enough for a vegetable garden and farming. It’s a good balance. Have you ever grown anything?
I’ve planted a few things, it’s fulfilling.
In Byculla [Mumbai], I grow my herbs in pots and buy all these seeds. It’s so simple—you literally follow the instructions on the box. What is absolutely remarkable is when you see the first indication of this microscopic green. It gives me such joy!
It would be nicer if we all grew more plants, wouldn’t it?
The problem with the urban landscape is it’s completely disconnected from the environment. Nobody understands the value of a tree, healthy environment, and fresh farm products. All you need is a trough to grow your veggies in—there’s no dependence on anything or anyone.
Modelling, in a way, allows for you to expand your life through travelling, meeting new people and having varied experiences.
