Buckle up and hold on tight – everything in fashion’s up in the air and we’re trying to peek through the dust as it settles. The big shakeups leave a lot of questions, and we want some answers.
We are in a time of change. The fashion industry is seeing the stresses of its system and the tides of upheaval. The past months have been rife with news of designer rotations – enough has been said about the tremendous pressures put on creative's (Raf Simons leaving Dior for its non-stop pace and large scale, for one). Then, in attempts at reform, industry giants are announcing unified gender shows, changing of conceptual directions, and see-now buy-now approaches, among others.
The last, while innocent-sounding, is insidious in its implications: design, prototyping, sampling, marketing, distribution, retail – all of these unglamorous back-end parts of the industry will suffer a crunch. Daylight savings for the business, just brought ahead – oh, I don’t know – six months.
There are a lot of questions needing answers, and even Gucci’s CEO and president Marco Bizzarri, when asked further about the strategy of logistics for combining men’s and women’s runway shows in the upcoming SS17 season, gave repeated replies of what amounted to “I don’t know”. Who does, then?
The Curious Case of IWWIWWIWI (I Want What I Want When I Want It)
Luxury hates fast fashion, yet it seems, ironically enough, that the way into the future is to adopt some measure of it. Industry sales and growth figures have been slumping, with behemoth brands reporting consecutive losses, tepid growth, and a discovery that the Chinese market is not the golden egg it was imagined to be.
