JANINE HAINES
Janine was the first Australian Democrats senator (the party I represented in the Federal Parliament from 1995 to 2008), and she was also the first female leader of any political party in Australia. I watched and learnt from her. After admiring her from afar, I reached out to her when I was a university student. She was kind enough to give me her time and counsel then and, later, launched my campaign for the Senate in 1995. She was a key part of me becoming the youngest woman ever to enter the Federal Parliament [at age 26] and her trailblazing work I admire to this day
