How three members of a family—a scientist, a hair expert and a trained Kathak dancer—joined hands to pave the way for a new generation of Ayurvedic products.
Vasavdatta Gandhi, 40, a fashion designer, Kathak dancer and mother to two young girls, was busy juggling her clothing label with piano recitals and PTAs. But taking care of her daughters’ delicate skins and greasy scalps was one of the key reasons she reached out, over three years ago, to her father in-law HI Gandhi, a scientist and a wizard in the lab.
Gandhi soon found a kindred spirit in her niece Sneha Daftary, 33, a haircare industry veteran of 15 years. Daftary loves classical music and curates Indian art at her residence. When she’s not holding a pair of scissors in her hands at her Mumbai salon Vous, you’ll catch her rehearsing on her tanpura. The two women bonded over their classical music/dance education and credited it for gleaning their perspective in the knowledge that the Indian Vedas hold.
