He’s the larger-than-life, gold-clad, sunglass-toting icon-in-himself, the superstar of ’80s and ’90s Bollywood music and the ultimate original. Bappi Lahiri breaks his bling-fix down for Anupama Chopra.
It is a truth universally acknowledged, in Bollywood at least, that Bappi Lahiri equals bling. Since the 1980s, this chart-topping composer has become synonymous with synthesized earworms on one hand, and a whole lot of gold on the other. A true disco, maybe more pop icon, Bappi da, as he is fondly referred to, has created over 9,000 songs but in addition to being this prolific composer, at 66, he remains the original king of all things over-the-top in Hindi cinema. Over beetroot borani, hummus and tea (his only addiction apart from gold, of course!) and Middle Eastern pide at Mumbai’s Bay route, Bappi da in his unique way tells me about what it takes to be a true original.
