I have been detecting since 2011 when my father got me into the hobby – and what a hobby it has turned out to be!
My very first silver coin was a Nerva denarius which are very rare coins to find anywhere, let alone in Scotland where I live. Since finding that I have been really hooked and enjoy being out and about with my Minelab CTX 3030.
A few years ago I was detecting a piece of land near an old medieval village with a castle that Edward I garrisoned during the battles of independence. Of course, in such an area I was really targeting those hammered coin losses, of which I found quite a few. After a while I changed to searching near to the edge of a small river. A positive signal here turned out to be a complete lug terminal from a Celtic tankard handle, only the second complete one of its type ever found in Scotland! It was in such good condition that some of the original leather binding had been preserved with it after 2100 years.

As in common with most people, when asked if they have found anything, the reply can often be âOh, only a bit of lead.â

Lost and Found?
There have been several instances over my long detecting career where, not only has it has been a delight to be able to help people who have lost things, but also a great thrill when such losses are returned to their owners. I have several memories of such occurrences.
