Focus On... Fruit In Pots

DO you find that growing fruit in containers is a bit hit or miss? Are yields disappointing, or do plants struggle? Well, no more! With a few key issues addressed, a mini potted orchard is within anyone’s reach, so let me tell you my tips on how to keep on top of it at this time of year.

The right place, the right space…

Any plant with its roots contained within a pot is reliant on you, far more so than if you grew it in the ground – so be nice! Ensure your plant is in an appropriate position and pot, then keep it well fed and watered throughout any period of active growth. If you can get that right, you’re on to a winner.

Now is a great time to buy and plant up fruiting crops, or to consider potting up congested plants. A larger container is far preferable to a smaller one, so don’t skimp on size. Look at the size of the plant’s rootball, then opt for a pot at least 2-3in (5-8cm) wider, with ample drainage holes in the base; if buying bare-root, ask the stockist for container size advice.

Thick-walled pots (like concrete troughs or half-barrels) insulate roots well. If using unglazed terracotta, line the sides with polythene to stop moisture loss, or sink a large plastic pot within it.

As well as the right compost (see page 20), position is key. Exposed windy sites will batter foliage and flowers and deter pollinators, so look for sun and shelter.

Stop feeding now and also reduce watering – waterlogged roots are more prone to chills and rots.

Stand containers on bricks or pot ‘feet’ – this elevates them off the ground to eliminate waterlogging.

If potting up now, you can line the insides of the pot with bubblewrap for root insulation (don’t line the base).
