Make sure spring colour returns next year, says Ruth

Sorting your spring bulbs

THE spring bulbs are almost done for this year and are dying back, leaving tangles of yellowing greenery. There are several important do’s and don’ts to remember if you want them to perform well again next year.

Feed them fortnightly with liquid tomato feed to help the bulbs swell and mature before they enter dormancy.

Let the leaves die back. They don’t look appealing, but if you cut them off or knot them it prevents them returning energy to the bulb for next year.

The next thing to decide is whether to lift the bulbs or leave them in situ.
