To solve the opioid epidemic, we need to apply the most powerful, innovative, and cost-effective approaches to address the root causes of pain within the human body.
Can the Opioid Crisis Be Tamed through an Ancient Chinese Secret?
Acupuncture represents a viable, evidence-based solution to our nation’s opioid problem. The infrastructure is already in place with more than 29,000 licensed acupuncturists across the nation and 60 accredited schools teaching Traditional Chinese Medicine to support future demand. Based on randomized, controlled trials (the gold standard in medical research), both the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) support acupuncture for the treatment of a wide variety of pain conditions.
Solid evidence also exists for its use in treating addiction. New options need to be explored to combat a crisis that claims the lives of more than 18,000 Americans each year and costs the US economy $60 billion annually. In fact, acupuncture is already being employed to deal with opioid addiction in a most unlikely institution: the US military. Our veterans’ overdose rate is 33 percent higher than that of their civilian peers. Disturbingly, the number of painkillers prescribed to war fighters skyrocketed from 866,773 in 2001 to 3.8 million in 2009; most of which were addictive opioids such as methadone, oxycodone, and hydrocodone. Deaths due to heroin overdoses have quadrupled since 2000.
