GRANDMASTER ANTHONY MOY TUNG DANDRIDGE started martial arts training at age nine. In 1980, he began studying Ving Tsun under Grandmaster Moy Yat, and in 1984, he became his disciple. In 1986, he founded the Richmond Moy Yat Kung Fu Academy. Today, there are over 25 branches in three generations of Grandmaster Moy Tung’s Kung Fu lineage.
What are things you’d like people to know about Sigung Moy Yat?
My Sifu was a legitimate grandmaster—I can’t even describe how great he was—his legacy lives on so much. Before we even got to meet him, he did this amazing training to make sure that he was legit. By the time he ever had students, they literally needed to thank him for the training he did when he was a boy because that’s what made the difference. That’s what made his Kung Fu—the training in those early years. Not worrying about being a Sifu, but just worrying about being great at Kung Fu, taking care of his Sifu, my Sigung, Yip Man.
Sifu had a real honest to God passion about Kung Fu. He turned out a lot of good guys; my brothers, their Kung Fu is fantastic. The thing that made me even join Sifu’s school was the experience I had with his students. I had never been in a school where all the students were so good. I was like, “Well, I’ve got a lot of great older brothers who are awesome; I’m in good hands!”
What was it like in your early days of training under Sigung?
