A LOVELY SETTING

The more than 6-hectare agri-tourism facility located along Araneta Street in Barangay Pahanocoy, which is owned and managed by the energetic, friendly, and accommodating husband-and-wife team of Ramon and May Uy, is comparable to the leisure farms in other countries where tourists or visitors can enjoy tasty organic food, fun-filled activities, and hands on lessons in organic farming.

It has a nice restaurant that offers organic food; cozy and well kept cottages and room accommodations—one of which has a private pool—garden cabanas, and facilities for conferences, weddings, and other occasions.

According to Ramon Uy, May’s Organic Garden is actually a spin-off effort of the RU Foundry and Machine Shop Corporation and Ecological and Agricultural Development Foundation, Inc. (EcoAgri) for showcasing various organic products and sharing organic farming technologies. “We advocate sustainable and responsible tourism, and we are promoting everything that is organic and natural, from the vegetables (to the) ornamental plants and farm animals that one will see in the facility,” he says.

This is part of the Uy couple’s commitment to Filipinos, as well as a way to achieve their objective of educating the youth and promoting organic farming.

INTERESTING FACILITIES

Other interesting features of the agri-tourism facility include the fully-operational Ram Pump, different shredding machines, and the actual production of muscovado sugar, vermicompost, and lemon grass oil.

URBAN GARDENER GROWS FOOD IN PLASTIC DRUMS AMID THE QUARANTINE FOR THEIR FAMILY'S FOOD SECURITY

IN QUEZON CITY, Daisy Cu, 46, began growing vegetables in their residence as an attempt at food security and self-sufficiency. Cu has been tending ornamental plants and fruit-bearing trees for years now. Her free time during the quarantine allowed her not only to focus on cultivating her existing plants, but also to produce vegetables at home using plastic drums. Cu's goal to provide food for their family is what urged her to establish a decorative, yet an edible garden incorporating ornamental and food crops. "With the use of the blue drums, I was able to achieve my intention of creating an edible but decorative garden plus I was able to repurpose the drums as well,” Cu explained.
