Wreaths, garlands, swags and trees—we really wouldn’t want to be without them at holiday time. However, if your preference is a fresh and natural product, it can be a challenge to find those that are affordable, stylish and remain fragrant. Happily, our friends at Lynch Creek Farm, with a long history of success and customer satisfaction, provide all that and more. We asked Andy Hunter, co-owner with his wife Tracey, to tell us the heart-warming story of how the business began and how they continue to evolve.
BRIGHT BEGINNINGS
“Lynch Creek Farm began in 1980 as a hobby farm in Shelton, Washington. Lynch Road was the local road the farm was on, and also the road my mother was born and raised on and, in fact, still lives on today. My grandparents and many other relatives lived on Lynch Road at that time. There is also a beautiful, wooded stream called Lynch Creek that ran through the back of our family property. As kids, my two brothers and I spent countless days playing in and along the creek. So, when our family business needed a name, Lynch Creek Farm was born. As a side note, my brother and his family live on the original Lynch Creek Farm property today, and my wife, two daughters and I live across the street from him on Lynch Road.
In the early days of the farm, we grew organic vegetables before organic was trendy and sold our produce at the Shelton Farmers Market on the weekends. In 1983, the farm broadened to include flowers and seasonal bouquets.
I remember getting up at 5 a.m. on Saturdays to harvest the veggies and flowers for the weekend market. Occasionally my two brothers and I would resist the early morning summons, hoping for a few more minutes of sleep, only to be dragged by our ankles from our warm beds by our dad. Time and radishes wait for no man, and those fields had to be harvested.
