1 KEEP IT SIMPLE
The first and probably best-known rule for saving money when renovating a bathroom is: if the layout works, don't change it. Unless you absolutely can't avoid it, try to put your new toilet, sink, or bath in the same position as the old ones so that you don't have to move the pipework. Complicated rearrangements of plumbing will cost you in labour and new parts, and that money could be better used on refreshing the things you can see.
2 Plan ahead
Being totally clear with what you want and where you want it will save you time and, ultimately, money. Get advice from the professionals to plan everything out and to tell you whether your dream bathroom can be realized, or if you need to revise your scheme to fit within your budget and the space you have. Have tradesmen lined up in the right order and have everything ready for when the installation starts, preventing delays in the project either waiting on materials or other professionals.
3 Choose dual-use
Although most people prefer to shower rather than take a bath these days, keeping the tub makes it more appealing to families if you ever come to sell your home.
Rather than trying to squeeze in a separate cubicle and a bath, one that is designed for both jobs is an acceptable and affordable compromise. Whether it's P- or L-shaped or just wider at one end, it can offer a spacious shower experience and somewhere for the kids to splash around, all in one piece of sanitaryware.
4 Fit it yourself
