THE TOWN OF BRIGHTON, ENGLAND, is often called “London on Sea,” but walking into Madeleine and Joe Lee’s seafront home, you could be forgiven for believing you were in Sweden.

Madeleine has spent a lot of time in Sweden, as her mother is Swedish. So, when she and her husband, Joe, made the leap from London to Brighton, it was her childhood memories of holidaying in rural Sweden that informed the interior design.

“When we decided to restore the period apartment, we starting stripping it back to the original features,” explains Madeleine. And there were plenty of features to find. Wonderful detailed cornicing was revealed, as well as parquet flooring and beautiful doors. They spent time taking off the years of neglect before they began adding their own personalities to the first-floor mansion apartment.
