When Steph White and her husband, James, first set eyes on their V V Victorian terraced house, they were smitten. 'It was more expensive than we could afford, but, as soon as we walked through the door and saw all the period features, we knew we wanted to make an offer,' says Steph. Fortunately for the couple, the housing market at the time was sluggish and they were able to negotiate on the price, finally securing it at the top of their budget.
Although the house seemed structurally sound, they uncovered numerous problems, from damp and peeling wallpaper to a leaking chimney breast. Initially, they did a cursory renovation, painting over the bare plaster walls in the second bedroom and remedying the damp by capping off the chimney. When we moved in, we went for an all-white scheme with feature wallpaper, but, over time, my style has softened and evolved,' explains Steph. 'We've been careful to respect the period feel of the house and, wherever possible, have retained the fireplaces and coving. I like to think of it as a cohesive, neutral space which feels inviting and cosy.
TIMELESS TRANSFORMATION
Over time, they've undertaken more extensive work: replacing dated windows with stylish uPVC sashes, replastering throughout, and extending at the rear to create an airy, open plan kitchen and living space. Understated off-white units are paired with carrara quartz for a timeless and elegant look. 'It's now the heart of the home, where James and I can chat as I prepare a meal, and where the dogs have plenty of space to roam around,' says Steph.
