John Sully took an adventure in his stride all his life...few hire boaters to tackle the Manchester Ship Canal or the Ribble Link.
As West Yorkshire Labour county councillor and Chairman of the West Yorkshire Recreation and Arts Committee, John was a catalyst for the restoration of two Pennine Ring canals – the Rochdale and Huddersfield Narrow.
He offered practica,l as well as financial, support through West Yorkshire Metropolitan County Council.
John was not only a politician, but he also lectured in accountancy at Leeds Polytechnic (now Leeds Metropolitan University) and, after retiring from there aged 50, moved into transport journalism.
