Away Days - This Week We Are Visiting Aberdeen

FIRST VISIT

Aberdeen first appeared in the top tier in season 1905/06 and their very first game against the Hoops was played at Celtic Park on December 9, 1905 when a Jimmy McMenemy goal gave Celtic a 1-0 win in front of 12,000 people. However, the Dons won by the same scoreline when the sides met for the first time at Pittodrie and that solitary goal for Jimmy Philip’s side - he managed the club from their first season in 1903/04 until 1923/24 - gave them one of their eight wins in their debut top-flight campaign as they finished 12th in a 16-team league. That Pittodrie defeat was one of only five losses for the Hoops that term as they won the second of six titles in a row.

MOST RECENT VISIT

Celtic last visited Pittodrie on February 25, 2018 and they recorded their 10th consecutive victory over Aberdeen with a 2-0 win. Moussa Dembele opened the scoring when he headed home a pinpoint James Forrest cross at the far post. Mikael Lustig then saw red after picking up his second yellow for a foul on former Celt, Gary Mackay-Steven. The home side couldn’t take advantage, though, and Dembele turned goal-maker when he teed up Kieran Tierney who fired home to make the final score 2-0. The Dons were also later reduced to 10 men when Sam Cosgrove was red-carded for the final act of a two-man, three-tackle assault on Scott Brown followed by Shay Logan blasting the ball off the downed skipper from point-blank range. The Celtic captain’s reaction in shrugging off the moment marked one of the highlights of his testimonial year.
