This week we have the greatest of them all, Jimmy McGrory …
IN lifting the 2016/17 title, Brendan Rodgers’ side scored 106 Premiership goals and reached 150 for the season in all competitions.
In this season’s Celtic View, we take a look at some of Celtic’s top goalscorers throughout the history of the club and highlight a few of the moments that added to their standing in the annals of a team known for its attacking philosophy down through the decades.
This week we have the greatest of them all, Jimmy McGrory …
FIRST GOAL, LEAGUE, FEBRUARY 3, 1923 KILMARNOCK 4-3 CELTIC
Celtic fired blanks in Jimmy McGrory’s first two league games for the Hoops, losing 1-0 at Third Lanark and drawing 0-0 with Hibernian in Glasgow, but it didn’t take him long to get off the mark in this third match. However, of the seven goals in the match against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, only three were scored by Celtic as they went down 4-3. The 18-year-old striker opened the scoring after only five minutes with the first of a record 468 he scored for the club. However, the home side equalised within two minutes and the ball, and the goals, flowed from end to end with the first half finishing 2-2 and Kilmarnock scoring the final goal following the 3-3 stalemate to take the two points. McGrory would spend the following season on loan at Clydebank before returning and blasting his way into the club’s history books.
LAST GOAL, LEAGUE OCTOBER 16, 1937 CELTIC 4-3 QUEEN’S PARK
