Foundation volunteers do great work in Malawi on Mary’s Meals projects.

Warm Heart Of Celtic

THE great name of Celtic and the wonderful work of Celtic FC Foundation was highlighted once again in Malawi back in June when a group of volunteers headed off from Paradise to a place known affectionately as ‘the warm heart of Africa’.

The 16 magnificent volunteers were: Mark Cameron, John Cassidy, Dannika Drain, Laura Gaffney, Rachel Kelly, Niall Keogh, Sean Kirwan, Mairi McAslan, Stevie McComiskie, Erin McGeough, Carol McGurin, Derek Noonan, Kathleen Noonan, Lynn Tennent, Gerald White, Kiera White.

The 10-day volunteer work placements in Blantyre, Malawi, were provided by Mary’s Meals and involved the renovation/redecoration of a number of schools to improve the learning environment for the children, plus assistance with the feeding programme. And there were also plenty of opportunities to interact with the local children.

We are honoured to work with Mary’s Meals, a global movement who provide one daily meal in a place of learning to attract chronically poor children into a classroom where they receive an education that can, in the future, be their ladder out of poverty. It costs just £13.90 to feed a child for a whole school year. Mary’s Meals began feeding 200 children in Malawi in 2002. Today, they are feeding over 1,000,000 children every school day.

Having settled into their new surroundings in Kabula Lodge, the Celtic TV volunteers met representatives from Mary’s Meals, and then made a stop at the Mary’s Meals headquarters to see, first-hand, the volume and invaluable nature of the operation. Inspired and excited, and now split into two working groups, they made the journey to their respective centres for children aged under six, which are supported by the Mary’s Meals feeding programme.
