How can the person in front of you compete with the promising ping of your phone

Have you ever been at a party thinking that you are having a really interesting conversation with someone, only to suddenly realise that the person that you thought you were holding in the spell of your wit and insight is actually looking over your shoulder scoping for a more interesting/influential person to talk to? I most definitely have. I had a friend who, at parties, was always looking over your shoulder at the front door to see if he needed to break with you in favour of a higher-ranking friend.
