Wishing on the STARS

Wishing on the STARS

On a clear, dark night, the sky is a magical sight. In every direction, we can see billions of stars – some with the naked eye and some with binoculars or a telescope. Above our heads, there are star clusters, galaxies (including, of course, our own, the Milky Way), nebulae (clouds of dust and gas that will eventually form stars) and planets.

Enjoying these spectacular sights is an enchanting pastime that the whole family can enjoy. And here in the southwest, we’re lucky to have some of the best places in the country to do it.

WHERE TO GO

Cornwall boasts two designated Dark Sky Discovery Sites: Carnewas and Bedruthan Steps and St Agnes Head; as well as one International Dark Sky Landscape on Bodmin Moor. Such status is recognition of an area’s exceptionally dark night skies, as well as commitment to reduce light pollution and promote education. Excitingly, there are efforts underway to create a second dark sky reserve, at West Penwith.

Visit gostargazing.co.uk for a map of other recommended places to enjoy the night sky, including the National Trust car parks at Pentireglaze near Wadebridge and Lantic Bay near Fowey; and various National Trust sites, such as Kynance Cove on The Lizard, Godolphin Hill near Helston and Trelissick near Truro.

But there may be a site much closer to your home. All that’s required is a remote place where there is no light pollution from cars, street lights and houses.
