A Family Summer in Bonn

This summer we had a memorable family vacation in Bonn. It began with me travelling in early August with my son and family to Germany. At the tail end of an ‘ayurvedic’ holiday, they took me back with them to their home in Bonn. We landed in Bonn on a very pleasant morning on August 5. On August 10, my three daughters and grandchildren arrived from Amsterdam. We ate, drank and chatted a lot from August 8 to 11 at my son’s home in Bonn. On August 11, we left in two cars for the vineyards of the Alsace region in eastern France adjoining the Black Forest. We stayed in a home-stay which was wonderful. Oh, what an eye-catching trip this was with green vineyards on both sides!

We reached the Alsace region and my daughters and daughter-in-law prepared a delicious dinner. The next morning, after breakfast, we went on a tour of the villages of Hunawihr and Riquewihr. The villages had fortified churches decorated with flowers. One of the churches was unique in the sense that it was a shared church for both Protestants and Catholics, built with sandstone and marble with stained glass portraying the life of Saint Nicholas. These villages were surrounded by vineyards and fields with a beautiful view of the hills. Riquewihr village is situated between the peaks of the Vosges Mountains and the plains of Alsace. This is a medieval village in the heart of the vineyard region.

The wine-growing community has 1,228 inhabitants and there are acres and acres of vineyard. What a spectacular sight this was! The village of Hunawihr is in the Haut-Rhine area of the Alsace region, not far from Riquewihr. It is a small and very pretty village surrounded by vineyards. We saw brightly painted medieval houses and churches. All these have made Hunawihr one of the most beautiful villages in France. We went for a stroll down the main street in Hunawihr. The street is lined with colourful half-timber houses. lots of wine houses offered tastings.
