Now well into his seventies, wildlife activist Maruti Chitampalli hasn’t lost any of his earlier drive in trying to make people aware about issues related to India’s birds and animals.
A life dedicated to a cause – saving the wildlife and the environment. Small wonder then that renowned conservationist Maruti Chitampalli (76) was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 12th edition of the Kirloskar Vasundhara International Film Festival hosted in January. Chitampalli has been instrumental in the development of the Karnala Bird Sanctuary, Navegaon National Park, Nagzira Sanctuary and the Melghat Tiger Project. He is also a Marathi writer and had presided over the Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in Solapur in 2006. Born on November 12, 1932, Maruti Chitampalli grew up in Solapur and then went to enroll himself in the State Forest Service College in Coimbatore. After completing his training, he joined the services with the Maharashtra state government.
During his professional life, he journeyed through various forests and national parks, learning about the grassroots realities the rural folk as well as their connection with the wildlife and the forests. This laid the foundation of his interest in writing his literary works, mostly in Marathi. He retired from service as the Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests but during his tenure was instrumental in the development of several bird sanctuaries and wildlife parks, also constructing orphanages for displaced wildlife at the Nagzira Sanctuary and the Melghat Tiger Reserve.
