Sumeet Vyas is the very picture of an entertainer whose star is – at last – on the rise
Sumeet Vyas has been doing ambitious crossovers since long before it became a meme thing. He’s been in the entertainment industry for 18 years: written and directed hit plays; acted in TV shows; “done radio”. His first appearance as an actor on the big screen was actually in 2006, but he considers his role as a taxi driver in English Vinglish to be his breakthrough moment. He arrived so early in the OTT space – with TVF’s hugely popular Permanent Roommates in 2014 – that he became the stereotype for the Boy Next Door* (*parental advisory version). Earlier this year, he took the director’s chair for the Vicky Kaushal-Angira Dhar-starrer Netflix film Love Per Square Foot. And yet, here’s Vyas doing something he’s never done in all this time: Twerking in a dance-off against Kareena Kapoor in this summer’s allgirls blowout, Veere Di Wedding. GQ catches up with the multi-hyphenate before he puts on his dancing shoes.
