An inevitable milestone in every woman’s life, menopause brings with it physical, emotional and hormonal changes that are often difficult to navigate. We spoke to Dr Tan Ay Eeng, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Prince Court Medical Centre, for the best ways to face these changes confidently.
“The average age of menopause is about 51 years old. The menopausal symptoms vary in duration and may last for a few years, depending on the woman’s general lifestyle.”
02 What are the common misconceptions about menopause that people have?
“The common misconception is that they’re getting old and there is no cure to menopausal symptoms, so they’re meant to bear with it. On the contrary, there are treatments available for women these days to alleviate the symptoms – it’s a matter of finding the right treatment for each individual.”
03 What are the early signs of menopause?
“The most common is irregular menstrual bleeding – as opposed to the previous years of regulated menstrual bleeding. As long as this symptom surfaces around the age of 50, it is highly likely that you are undergoing menopause. Though of course, to be certain, you can check with a medical professional.”
04 How should women navigate the changes and symptoms?
“The best way is through self-reflection. There needs to be a heightened sense of awareness towards the changes in your body, instead of making excuses for what they could be. Know that menopause need not deteriorate your quality of life – consult a doctor to obtain advice on preparing for menopause and to have a more positive understanding of it.”
