One woman recounts how a series of traumatic events led her to a downward spiral of misery. By Poon Li-Wei
“Before drugs, I was the average girl who had gone to school and then college; I even had a pretty decent job. Unfortunately, everything changed when I began mixing with the wrong crowd. I was thrust into a life that revolved around clubbing, smoking, and drinking – it’s how I met the guy I would eventually marry.
DOWN A DARK PATH
When I discovered he pushed drugs for a living, he began to egg me on. Driven by curiosity, I eventually relented and gave the substance a try. I didn’t particularly like my first brush with meth – sure, it made me feel energetic and almost invincible at first, but once the effects had worn off, I was left feeling drained and exhausted. Still, it didn’t take long for the drug to hook its claws into me and, addicted to the lifestyle, I said yes when he proposed.
A TOXIC MARRIAGE
It was only downhill from that point. Our toxic relationship slowly consumed me – arguments became frequent, stemming from both financial problems and his dissatisfaction at how he felt neglected when I paid more attention to our son. This led to him seeking out his friends who ran in the same circles, and when I noticed how irresponsible he was becoming towards our family, I found myself picking fights with him at every turn. Inevitably, our relationship became abusive – physically, mentally, and emotionally.
