A storm is brewing ahead. 2018 is set to be a hugely exciting year for all football fans, and possibly a year of major changes. From the start of the winter transfer window, the Champions League final, major futsal tournaments, and the World Cup in June, we are set to see landmark decisions on football being made on the global stage.

Previously, I wrote about how important it is for football to adopt and iron out issues so as to help referees make better decisions. So for starters, I’m happy to report that in December’s FIFA Club World Cup held in UAE, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology was successfully implemented. As well as trialling virtual offside line technologies and referee communication systems, FIFA also tested a centralised VAR solution for the first time. It worked seamlessly, and we can expect to see more of it in 2018.
