SDAA+OP sits down with the owners of the dive operation that won the Green Fins Award, AB Wonderdive’s Bjørn and Alice Askholm, to learn a bit more about them.
What got you into diving?
Water sports have always been a part of our lives – sailing, racing regattas, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, underwater rugby, and my father was certified as a diver in the 60s!
In 1994, while we were working as teachers in Denmark, a good friend who was living and teaching diving in the Maldives asked us to come for a visit. So, there was only one thing to do: learn to dive. We signed ourselves up for dive classes with him, but I was impatient and wanted to start right away. I signed up for the Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water + Emergency First Response in Denmark, during the winter time before we went to the Maldives. Arriving in the Maldives in 1995, Alice did the Open Water Diver with our friend and I did the Rescue.
How did you end up in Puerto Galera, and why did you decide to open a dive centre there?
After our holiday in the Maldives we decided to change our lives. The following summer I quit my job and started taking more dive courses, becoming a Master Scuba Diver Trainer in October of ’95. Once Alice also quit her job we planned to travel to the Caribbean, to look for a job for me as a dive instructor, and Alice as a physiotherapist. In January 1996 we travelled to Martinique, St. Lucia, Dominica and Aruba. Alice became a divemaster but still it was difficult for us to make a living.
