Hopes are high in the country that the Indian contingent will cross the 10-medal mark at the Rio Olympics this time...
Just about a month remains for the greatest sporting spectacle of the world to unfold. The Rio Olympics is set to invade the hearts of all sports lovers across the globe. Featuring the best sports and the greatest players, the Olympics is also quite avidly watched in India as well. Though India has traditionally not done too well at the Olympics, their form has been improving with every event.
In the London Olympics in 2012, India had registered 6 medals, which was pretty decent by the country’s standards. Over the last four years, Indian athletes and sports persons from varied fields have been regularly making a mark everywhere. Hence, hopes are high in the country that the Indian contingent will cross the 10-medal mark at the Rio Olympics this time.
“We are sticking to our projection of around 10 to 14 medals going by current form of our athletes. We were earlier focusing on just seven disciplines but looking at our recent performances in athletics and golf, we believe there is hope there too,” said Sports Authority of India director general Injetti Srinivas to the press recently.
The hopes, then, are pretty high. Whether this transforms into actual medals remains to be seen. For now, India has a 96-strong contingent - its largest ever - who would be keen to make their country proud. And although some star players are missing, there still are quite a few talented individuals there who can bring home some medals. Let’s have a look at some of them.
