That time of the year when cities, towns and houses begin to put up colourful and merry decorations. It is typically time that is meant to be spent with family and close friends—an occasion enhanced by scrumptious traditional foods that put smiles on everyone’s faces, no matter their age.
While some of us immediately think of a roasted turkey with all the works on Christmas, many other countries don’t actually celebrate Christmas with the popular bird... but that’s the best part!
Dining on sweetbreads, dumplings, hearty stews and all sorts of other treats during the Christmas season found in other countries reveal not only the cultural differences of those who celebrate the holiday but also sheds light on the history of its people. Some dishes may surprise you while others inspire, but the main purpose of the food remains the same: to bring people together.
1 GERMANY: ROAST GOOSE AND RED CABBAGE
In Germany, succulent roast goose and braised red cabbage is a time-honoured meal to have during Christmas. What better way to stave off the cold and bring warmth to the body than a tasty roasted goose, which by the way is juicier than its more popular counterpart—turkey. Europeans have been eating the bird for centuries before turkey was favoured. Red cabbage on the other hand, adds a touch of colour to the festivities, plus a slightly spiced and sour mix to balance out the rich and fatty goose. This classic combination can also be seen on German tables during St Martin’s Day.
2 POLAND: BORSCHT
